bespoke handmade staircases, made to measure in Redditch

Grosvenor Stairs joiners have been hand-crafting made-to-measure staircases since 1977, selecting the timber, cutting the components, and assembling the finished staircase in our workshop before it leaves for your door.

Every staircase we build starts with your home’s exact measurements, not a standard template. Whether you’re replacing an existing staircase, fitting out a loft conversion, or building from new, we can design and build a staircase that fits your space precisely and looks at home in it for decades.

Our staircases comply with UK Building Regulations (Part K). And if your project is time-sensitive, our 7-day express delivery service means a new staircase doesn’t have to mean a long wait.

which staircase do you need?

Before choosing a staircase, it helps to know what the options mean. Here is a plain-English guide to the five types we offer…

bespoke straight staircase

A straight staircase runs in a single direction from bottom to top, with no turns. It is the most straightforward to fit and works well where there is a clear run of space, typically when the hall or landing runs parallel to the stairs. If your existing staircase is a simple straight flight, this is usually what you are replacing.

Best for:

  • Hallways with a direct, uninterrupted run.
  • New builds with standard layouts.
  • Loft conversions with adequate headroom on a straight run.

bespoke single winder staircase

A winder staircase turns a corner using kite-shaped steps instead of a flat landing. A single winder turns once, either to the right (RH) or to the left (LH) as you climb. This is determined by which direction the staircase needs to face at the top.

Right-hand (RH): The staircase turns to the right as you ascend.
Left-hand (LH): The staircase turns to the left as you ascend.

A single winder is a popular choice for homes where a landing would take too much floor space, or where the staircase needs to change direction once to reach the landing at the top. It can often fit in the same footprint as many straight staircase layouts.

Best for:

  • Terraced and semi-detached homes where space is tight.
  • Replacing an existing winder.
  • Loft conversions that need to turn once to reach the new floor.

bespoke double winder staircase

A double winder turns twice on the way up, using two sets of wedge-shaped steps. This lets a staircase change direction at both the bottom and the top – or make a full 180-degree turn – without needing a flat landing at either point.

It’s a space-efficient solution that often surprises homeowners with how well it fits into a compact footprint. As with single winders, double winders come in right-hand (RH) or left-hand (LH) configurations.

One of the questions we are most often asked is whether a tight space means the homeowner is limited to a spiral staircase. The answer is almost always no – a double winder will usually fit in the same space and is far more practical to use day-to-day.

Right-hand (RH): Both turns go to the right as you ascend.
Left-hand (LH): Both turns go to the left as you ascend.

Best for:

  • Homes where space at the bottom and top of the staircase is limited.
  • Replacing an existing double winder.
  • Any layout that would previously have required a spiral.

how a bespoke staircase from Grosvenor Stairs is made

Every staircase we produce is handcrafted by our joiners in our Redditch workshop. We work with a wide range of popular timbers – pine is our most popular, but we also work with oak, ash, tulip and others depending on availability and your preference.

The staircase is dry-assembled before it leaves the workshop, so the fit is confirmed before delivery. It arrives pre-sanded and ready for your preferred finish.

Our own delivery vehicles bring every staircase to site, and we can arrange professional fitting on delivery if needed.

how to order your staircase

Getting a made-to-measure staircase from Grosvenor Stairs follows a clear path. Here is what to expect.

  1. Choose your staircase type
Use this page to identify the configuration – straight, single winder, or double winder – and the direction of turn (if applicable). View the options for each type and add to your basket to configure your specification and measurements.

  2. Submit your measurements or request a survey
Many customers measure their own staircase opening and submit the details with their order – we can talk you through the measurements on the phone (01527 551870). If measuring feels daunting, or if you want certainty before committing, we offer a free no-obligation onsite survey. We come to you, take the measurements, and confirm the right specification.

  3. We build your staircase
Once we have your signed design form and order, your staircase is built in our Redditch workshop. Standard timescales are 5 to 10 working days from order confirmation, with a delivery date confirmed at the time of order. If your project is time-sensitive, ask about our 7-day express delivery service.

  4. Delivery and fitting
We deliver on our own vehicles. Your staircase arrives dry-assembled – either flat-packed or part-assembled as you prefer – ready for your fitter or for our team to install.

common questions about ordering a bespoke staircase

Will my new staircase comply with building regulations?

Yes. All staircases we manufacture are designed to comply with UK Building Regulations (Part K) for domestic properties. Part K covers stair pitch, headroom, step dimensions, and the maximum gap in balustrade (no larger than 100mm).

If you are asking about a commercial property, call us to discuss – commercial specifications require a separate conversation.

How long will my staircase take?

From confirmed order and signed staircase design form, standard timescales are 5 to 10 working days. We confirm a delivery date at the point of order. If you need it sooner, call us – we will do what we can, and our 7-day express service covers standard specifications.

Do you make oak staircases?

Yes. We manufacture with all types of timber and oak is the most popular hardwood choice. Other timber types are available.

What finish does the staircase come in?

Your staircase arrives pre-sanded and ready for finishing. We do not apply a finish before delivery – this allows you to choose your preferred product and apply it after fitting

What if I can’t measure my staircase opening?

Call us on 01527 551870 – we can often talk you through the measurements on the phone. If that’s not straightforward, we offer an onsite survey service. We visit your home, take the measurements, and take the uncertainty away before you order.

Showroom visits welcome

I only have a small space – do I need a spiral staircase?

Almost certainly not. A winding staircase will fit in the same footprint as many spaces that are assumed to require a spiral and is much more practical day-to-day. Call us with your measurements and we can advise quickly.

Can you replicate my existing balustrade?

Yes – we work with highly skilled craftspeople, including specialist hand turners who produce bespoke newels and spindles, and we have access to an extensive library of over 1,000 handrail moulding profiles. If your exact profile isn’t available, we can commission custom cutters to recreate it with precision.

While intricate hand-carved detailing is very specialist, our trusted network of artisans means we may still be able to point you in the right direction – please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

ready to get started?
